BILL ETRA
Today’s live-mix video tools must seem like a dream realized to BILL ETRA, because he is the daddy of them all. He is co-inventor of one of the first experimental video-effects machines, the Rutt-Etra Synthesizer, an analog video raster that allowed artists to manipulate live video images. Nam June Paik, Gary Hill, and other influential video artists were experimenting with the video synth that Etra developed with Steve Rutt and introduced in 1970. Etra is also a founding member of the Kitchen Video Theater, now known simply as The Kitchen.

SUBCARRIER
Andy Graydon and Giles Hendrix is SUBCARRIER are which they explore the synch moment. Using video of simple actions shot specifically for the performance, both Hendrix and Graydon manipulate video and audio simultaneously to create a kind of “video concrete” in an improvisational setting, in which media objects are the true instruments of performance.

VANESSA VELASQUEZ
Transplanted Brazilian native Velasquez can be seen every Friday at Mundial, the East Village’s newest video bar. Her work has been seen at Brazil Premiere Film Festival closing night event at the Kitchen, the Robotico series, SOB’s, and at the Knitting Factory with legendary New York synth punk band SUICIDE. DJ RAY VELASQUEZ, her partner in crime, provides a lush, eclectic blend of cool jazz, samba electronica, nova bossa nova and abstract breaks for our aural and visual pleasure.

Sima is just obsessed with mixing video. Just ask him, and he will whip out some of his mixes downloaded to his phone or PDA. Working mostly solo at all-night parties at the Sullivan Room, B1 Drink Club, and Hyper-Nation; his latest hardware-du-jour is a video turntable aptly dubbed “Pinky”. Tonight
he joined by his brother, DJ ACTIVEPHAZE.

In addition to live-mix video by NYC’s premiere VJs and Video Artists, next week’s EyeWash will feature a special screening of the “Best of VJ Culture” from the London-based series curated by our friend across the pond, VJ Anyone.

VJ CULTURE is a series exploring VJing as a moving image art form. Curated by VJ Anyone (Oliver Sorrentino), events are every two months at London’s ICA. VJ Culture has screened self-contained audiovisual works, performance archives and promotional material from VJs across Europe, Asia, The
Americas and the Middle East, of exceptional quality. The screenings are punctuated by presentations of attending participants and discussions with the audience, on issues relative to the given themes.
