Spaz: Interaction with laser light

SpazplaySPAZ - QT5 11MB The lines are already there, but it takes a dancer to reveal them. He interrupts the beam with his body changing its shape and location. He plucks light from the dark like a musical instrument creating harmonies and rhythms of expression. What makes SPAZ interesting is that it is technology expressed with the body. Not in a mechanical or cumbersome way but full of energy and life.– choreographer, Eric Dunlap

Spazlrg97This versatile work has been performed in traditional theater venues, dazzled guests at parties and events, and attracted crowds to store windows and installations. In this visual performance the dancer creates a lightshow with his body by breaking the beams of two lasers. Spaz plays along with DJ’s and musicians, expressing and challenging the music with his qualities of motion.

As designers, we’ve always been minimalists, but constructing a dance in one dimension (spatially speaking, as time is also a dimension), can be quite limiting. Imagine telling a dancer that he can only move along a straight line, the only gestures that count are the ones that intersect the line! But instead of seeing the dance as confined in space, we begin to explore the dance through Time, Shape, and Qualities of motion. The way we look at technology with an objective eye, we can also examine movement, and its separate qualities, objectively as well. In a sense, our limitations free us to explore deeper dimensions of expression.
