QUICK SUMMARY
vBrooklyn is a video-festival about:
-Brooklyn as a place
-Video as an art form
Abstract:
The vBrooklyn video festival seeks to document the current, evolving state
of Brooklyn’s development through the current, evolving state of video.
Brooklyn is New York City’s most populous borough and would be the United
States’ fourth largest city if independent. It’s undergoing a period of
intense physical transformation as more people move into the borough and
development hits critical mass.
We want to visually record Brooklyn’s waterfront, downtown and industrial
areas (as well as other parts of the borough in flux) before the current
wave of development permanently changes them — Our goal is for video
artists to build Brooklyn’s historic record by combining personal
interpretation and factual documentation.
CRITERIA
Our major criteria for participation is original video footage shot by the artist of Brooklyn’s waterfront, industrial or downtown areas .
We feel there’s much room for interpretation: The waterfront covers Greenpoint to the Verazanno Narrows to Coney Island; There are many neighborhoods in various states of change; Subject matter can be as detailed as specific architecture or as broad as vast cityscapes; Artists can work with views of and from Brooklyn that might no longer be available after development; etc.
We are seeking pieces that express Brooklyn as a place, a physical location, a unique cityscape.
We are looking for personal expression, not just literal documentation. The underlying footage will provide the documentary element the festival seeks to incorporate.
We are seeking pieces that approach video as an art-form.
Since many areas of Brooklyn are already changing and much development is planned, we encourage participating artists to start shooting during Spring 2006.
Artists are also encouraged to use any of their own footage that predates this call for submissions.
Screened-pieces and performances should be no longer than 10 minutes. If this limit is a problem, please email to discuss.
LOGISTICS - WHEN, WHERE AND WHAT
The festival will take place late 2006 / early 2007, depending on the venue(s) we work with.
The deadline for finished pieces will be sometime in Winter 2006, depending on the festival’s actual date.
Pieces will be presented through screenings and performances. We are interested in installations but aren’t sure we can accommodate them.
Works will be displayed at one or many locations.
All copyrights to the work remain with the individual artists.
